Look at the jack and count the number of metal segments. The plastic rings separate the segments. Typical headphones has 3 segments – left, right, and ground. Headphones designed for phones have 4, with the extra mainly for the microphone. There is an input using this 4th piece of metal on the jack.

3.5mm is the diameter of the hole, but not the number of contacts. Headphone output requires 3 wires TRS. A headphone with a microphone and volume controls requires 4 wires TRRS. The play/pause signal is a certain combination of signal on certain wires that the phone understands.

It can be an input, too. If you look at the plug, you’ll see a few bands. From the tip, you have left and right, maybe another for a mic or other controls, and the sheath going to the base for ground.
