aches from camping as an adult vs as a kid

When I used to camp as a kid, I didn’t need a sleeping mat and I could sleep on fairly rough ground (even using a rolled up jumper/sweater as a pillow) and I would wake up feeling great.

Now, approaching 40, I have a camper van. The fold down bed is fairly hard but it’s comfy enough. Last weekend I went away for a night and even took pillows from home (instead of the camping pillows u have). I woke up with some serious back stiffness and, even today, I’m still suffering from it.

So, please explain like I’m 5, why does getting old feel like you’re getting old in this case 😊

You’re heavier. You have decades of wear and tear on your body. You have decades of your muscles, joints and tendons deteriorating in their flexibility and range of motion due to all the neglect you put your body through.

And you have decades of mild malnutrition and the other side effects of poor dietary choices. Most of us are starting to feel the effects of perpetual vitamin and mineral deficiencies by that age.

If you spend a lifetime eating and exercising as your body deserves, you wouldn’t feel so bad camping. But few of us do that.
