ADHD Paralysis

What is it and why does the body do it? It seems like the mind is telling the person to do something but one cannot get themselves to actually do it.

I am starving. My house has several snacks, multiple leftovers, and stuff for sandwiches, salads, etc. Many things to choose from. But I’ve been sick all week and work is piling up so I don’t have the time or energy to make a lunch. I need to get back to work. But I need to eat something or I’ll be suffering while attempting to work. I could snack, but I’m sick of snacks and I know I need a meal, not just a snack. What I really want would require me to leave the house and spend money, which is also not gonna happen. So now I’m not eating, _and_ not working, _and_ browsing reddit replying to a post. Please send help

That is exactly what happens. We ADHD people need a certain amount of energy to start doing things, and if the energy’s not there, we just…can’t. And the threshold is higher than for most other people, because the connections between the “realize you need to do a thing” neurons and the “actually start moving” neurons are weaker than in everybody else.

Medication helps with this.

There are two great YouTube channels**-Living with ADHD** and **ADHD Love (?)**

I was diagnosed at 44 with ADHD but found out six months ago after my 50th that I have Complex type ADHD. They are worlds apart in treatment, but both share the self-loathing, feelings of failure, and so much more that I couldn’t list it all here.

The depressing part is the suicide rate of ADHD with comorbidities and age progression is sickening, but as our depression brethren will tell you they are told, we are told to “get over it”, “snap out of it”, and “just pay attention!”

**If you are or think you are ADHD, please get help now.** If you think you have or have been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or spectrum designation, scream until they find you someone who specializes in Complex ADHD.

It’s six months later, I’m still waiting on a doctor, and my entire life has now become crystal clear. So many wasted decades because in my generation we were just “fuck ups.”

Do NOT be ashamed to get the help you deserve. We can’t allow the neuro-typicals to continue to dismiss us, as we are almost 10% of the world, and the next branch of evolution.

IIRC: the front part of our brain controls the executive function. Executive function is what helps us start tasks, know which task to start, organize sensory information–among other things.

Doing those things requires a few neurotransmitters, including norepinephrine and dopamine. People with ADHD have brains that don’t use them correctly. It shows up on certain kinds of brain scans, even.

(the stimulant meds like adderall and ritalin work in part because they tell our brains to make more norepinephrine and dopamine)
