For whatever reason, the human brain can easily count to 10-15 at a glance. If you look at a pile of rocks you can almost intuitively count them. Aside from that and fingers, 10 is an easy number to multiply/divide. 10÷2, 10×2, the numbers are easy to split and add using a base 10 number system.
