App/Website Development

For complex apps doing a lot of work not released by a company like Alphabet or Meta — for example, perhaps a Strava or something — is the code base for that tool completely original or is it using code from other code bases?

The idea of building a complicated app/game/tool completely from scratch is mind-blowing to me. Does that happen?

Yup there are companies such as [Epic](https://www.epic.com/) who creates their code base completely from scratch, but they did start in 1979 so a lot of their stuff already have some form of framework. They have not acquired anything and builds almost everything in house.

But this is the exception from the norm. Majority of the companies out there won’t want to reinvent the wheel. And I believe this is how companies iterate and advance faster. Think of it like our society. If each individual person needs to learn how to do everything around their house, people won’t be experts and will take a long time until they become good enough at each task. But once we started specializing and we have builders, framers, landscapers, etc. We start pushing the boundaries in those fields which advance the technologies in them further. So why not specialize and why build from scratch?
