For complex apps doing a lot of work not released by a company like Alphabet or Meta — for example, perhaps a Strava or something — is the code base for that tool completely original or is it using code from other code bases?
The idea of building a complicated app/game/tool completely from scratch is mind-blowing to me. Does that happen?

There are lots of libraries that will do lots of the common stuff for you. For games there are game engines that handle a lot of the physics logic so the developers don’t need to do the math-intensive parts themselves.
There is still a lot of work involved for the developers though because not everything is shared logic.
