Are bucks (male deer) less common than does (female deer).

I live in a very wooded area and I rarely see a deer with antlers, maybe once or twice a year. However, pretty much every single day I see a herd of does walking across my property eating grass. Where are the bucks? Why do they seem to be wildly less common to see than does?

Natural deer populations are r typically 2:1 female to male. For reference, the majority of sexual creatures are closer to 1:1 ratios.

Hunted populations are often closer to 6:1 because people mainly hunt males and they can be reclusive or revolve around large female populations during the usual hunting seasons.

Deer shed their antlers annually and only grow them around mating season. So you’re only going to see antlers certain times of year to begin with.
