I know cpu connects to different hardwares in a motherboard, but are traces and bus the same thing (external bus)?

A “bus” is a group of traces with a specific meaning. Traces run all over the board, that’s how all the electricity flows. One trace runs over to the little LED that the computer winks to show it’s booting up. that’s not a bus.

A bus is a reusable design that many manufacturers can use. The PCI bus (Peripheral Component Interconnect bus), for example, is used to with PCI connectors to plug in cards that have a PCI interface. There are PCI bus traces on the board, some of which run to the PCI connectors and others run to onboard PCI devices (which might include MoBo graphics).
