I sometimes read about or hear about famous artists (painters, sketchers and sculptors) and ask myself how they got famous. Now, these can be very talented artists or just meh. And come across some artist that a completely out of this world and nobody knows their names.
How do (sometimes average) artists like this gain fame and critical acclaim while others who seem more talented languish in obscurity?

Mostly due to the size of their marketing budget, and being at the right place at the right time, knowing the right people. But marketing budget likely makes most of the difference.
