As far as I know we had 5 ice ages I know what caused them but how do we know we had those. (some million or thousands years ago.)

The earth is an onion. You peel back layers, and find more layers. Now imagine each of those layers has a different texture, and depending on the texture it tells you when they’re from. Like “wow! There’s another layer! And it is brown. Brown means it is X years old. Cool!”
