The track side barrier mechanism can see the resistance between the tracks as the rail cars pass over them – rail cars keeping them both shorted together as they pass over (the axles in the bogies (axle carriers) create a short between the rails). When this goes away then the barrier will reopen. In addition for some systems. I think there may be other mechanisms as well, but that is the one I know of……..
