How does Spotify (etc.) make “radio stations” based on certain artists? How do they know (with varying accuracy) what should be considered similar to what you were looking for?

It would be very hard for Spotify to classify each track accurately to serve actual genre recommendations. So instead, they compare all their users. Say you and some rando across the country both listen to a lot of the same artists. If the other person listens to an artist that you don’t, depending on how similar your listening habits are Spotify might go “there’s a good chance this person will enjoy this artist because users who listen to a lot of the same stuff listen to this artist too”. So they take a track from that artists catalog that users with similar taste listen to and they offer it to you
