Bass and guitar pedals

I’m about to get into bass

I’ve looked up and there were basic ones, and really weird ones… I’d apprechiate if someone could explain at least what the basic/common ones do. Also explain which ones are the most useful etc. just dump your pedal-knowledge here… like I’m five.

Most important is a tuner pedal. It helps you tune your bass, and playing in tune is very important. A compressor pedal makes loud stuff quieter and quiet stuff louder which helps to even out your sound. A chorus pedal splits your sound and detunes & retunes one of those signals very slightly, this can add shimmer and depth to your tone. Distortion and fuzz add grit to your tone. Any pedal other than the tuner can make your bass sound crappy if they’re overused or used poorly.

Let me ask 2 basic questions, then make a suggestion:

1. What kind of music are you going to play?

2. Have you determined your basic rig, bass and amp? Why do you need pedals immediately?

If you have bought your rig already, go talk with the store you purchased them from – if not, ask the store where you intend to buy from, they are usually the first source.

You’re not likely to get the answers on this Subreddit.

There are a number of communities on Reddit that are for bass.

And, there are a multitude of communities on-line like Talk Bass and Bass Buzz, among many others, including the manufactures themselves, like the Fender Forums.

Any of these resources will likely better serve you…
