Bayou, Creek, River Differences

219 viewsOther

When I have visited Louisiana in the past I have seen several bayous, some look like rivers to me. Here in Kentucky I only know of one and it seems to be very tiny by comparison, it looks like just a very small creek to me. I have tried Googling before but never did find a concise answer.

Can someone please for me what the differences in bayous, creeks, & rivers are?

Thank you.

Bayou has basically no current flow. Its a swamp you can boat on. Basically a shallow lake. Think https://www.shoreexcursionsgroup.com/img/tour/CANOGLSWAMP-2.jpg

A creek is a small flowing body of water, its really hard to define, but basically too small to take a boat on. Think https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cayoosh-creek.jpg

And a river is a river. Big, flowing water. think https://www.americanrivers.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Colorado-River-AZ_Fred-Phillips.-paris-climate-agreementjpg-scaled-1-2048×1364.jpg
