It’s essentially making the game a 50/50 shot based on the previous performance of each team. There are many factors, but at its simplest level, if the Tigers have a point differential of say, 6 points (that is, on average they outscore their opponents by 6 point per game) and the Unicorns differential is 10 points, then an oddsmaker might make the spread Tigers +4. If the Tigers then go on to lose by 3 or less, or win the game, then a bet on the Tigers would win. If they lose by exactly 4 it’s a push, or if they lose by more than 4 then the bet loses. You simply add or subtract the plus or minus number to the score of that team, and then your bet either wins or loses based on that adjusted number.
