black and white light. How do dyes work

If black is the absence of light, and white light is all coloured light combined, how do black and white dyes work in that aspect?

Black absorbs most of the spectrum of visible light. White reflects most. The different colors reflect differnt wavelengths.

Eyes have rods and cones. That detect light. Cones detect one of three wavelengths. You’re brain merges that information to create a perception of the objects color. If it detects no wavelengths its black. If it detects all its white.

Rods only detect amounts of light not the wavelengths
