but seriously, how do people lose one sock in the laundry?

We’ve all had this occur multiple times in our lives: we do the laundry, one sock from the pair goes missing. We check the washer and the dryer, it’s nowhere to be found. It happens often enough to be a running cultural, universal joke. But it makes no sense. How does it happen?

I distinctly remember as a kid, we went to replace the washer/dryer and found SO MANY SOCKS hidden between and behind the units. Socks are small. They can fit into the little gaps around the machine with ease.

Additionally like someone else said, socks don’t always make it into the load but you don’t realize until you’re folding. Maybe they fell behind the basket. Or behind your bed. Or any other little places you don’t look often.

They can also get tangled into your laundry. Inside sleeves or sheets is common.

Also if you have a front load washer? I’ve had socks get stuck in the gasket around the door. Where I didn’t see them until I went to clean it out.

Generally they work themselves in between the agitator and the inside of the tub. As it washes the clothes it tears the errands sock apart into lint and loose threads.

It is a scientific fact that Socks are the larval stage of clothing hangers. The go through metamorphosis due to the heat in the dryer. That’s where all the extra wire hangers come from.

I would just like to ask why in the hell would one of the most complex and baffling questions faced by mankind be posed early on a Monday morning, for god’s sake, I have not even had my coffee yet!

Sometimes they’re at the front of the dryer by the door. If you’re removing the dried laundry in a hurry, you can miss a sock there.

This is why I made a choice a few years ago to always buy the same brand and colour of sock
