Calories aside, why is some food unhealthy?

I understand that calories control weight gain/loss, but why are some foods unhealthy? If you are healthy, work out, and have no deficiencies, why shouldn’t you eat loads of chocolate, soft drinks etc? Doesn’t everything we eat break down into the same stuff?

Foods that are especially high in sugar and non-complex carbs are higher on the glycemic index, meaning they cause a quick and large spike in your blood sugar. Frequently having these large spikes is what can lead to one’s body becoming insulin resistant, a precursor to diabetes among other issues. Proper exercise can mitigate this but it’s still why you should eat a balanced diet.

ETA: this is of course not the entire reasoning, just one aspect I’m personally more aware of because I eat a low carb diet.

It’s also about calories vs nutritional value (the stuff in the food that your body needs to function). If you have food with lots of calories but no nutritional value, you ate a lot of calories but still need the nutrients. So you need to eat more food that does contain nutrients which also means taking in more calories. This will lead to a calory surplus that you will need to get rid off. Unfortunately, exercise will only burn off a relatively small amount of calories compared to how easy it is to take in large amounts of calories.

Other than that there’s also things like soft drinks being bad for your teeth due to their acidity, or alcohol being harmful to the brain and liver.

There can be many reasons. Keeping this very basic foods can be unhealth as they just lack in nutritional value meaning eating them doesn’t give your body anything it really needs besides the pleasure of eating it. Other reasons can be it effects your blood sugar possibly causing problems it can also effect your ldl and hdl cholesterol levels.

Because some food is full of chemicals and stabilizers and colors and ‘flavors’. Yes you can eat it, but it’s not healthy.

Some foods have little nutritional value besides the calories. Other foods are loaded with fat, sugar, and salt, which are all bad for you in excess. Take soda for example – It’s basically just extremely sweet corn syrup and carbonated water. It has no nutritional value but it’s packed full of sugar. Excessive sugar intake can lead to all kinds of health issues.
