Calories aside, why is some food unhealthy?

I understand that calories control weight gain/loss, but why are some foods unhealthy? If you are healthy, work out, and have no deficiencies, why shouldn’t you eat loads of chocolate, soft drinks etc? Doesn’t everything we eat break down into the same stuff?

Some foods have little nutritional value besides the calories. Other foods are loaded with fat, sugar, and salt, which are all bad for you in excess. Take soda for example – It’s basically just extremely sweet corn syrup and carbonated water. It has no nutritional value but it’s packed full of sugar. Excessive sugar intake can lead to all kinds of health issues.
