Can any Literary scholars explain to me what the Objective Correlative theory is?

Objective Correlative theory suggests that properly expressing emotion in literature requires the writer to describe all the circumstances which lead the character to hold a particular emotion.
Simply describing how a character feels is inadequate. The author must describe what occurred such that it is hard to believe that the character would feel any other way.The described circumstances should induce the reader to correctly discern for theirself the character’s emotional state.
