Surely the many miles of underground pipes are a breeding ground for microbes, right?

The water is cleaned then kept at high pressure so nothing can enter the pipe

That’s why when pipes burst it causes flooding in the area and you see water shooting everywhere. The pressure doesn’t just make sure water runs up to your tap. It keeps dirt, bugs etc out.

So you have treated cleaned water going through mostly metal or plastic piping at pressure to prevent anything from entering.

This is also why they will tell you to boil water for a while if there is a water main break. And when repaired you should run your water for like 20 mins or more just to clear out the pipes
