: Can someone explain the Willis hypothesis ?

I am watching Helix and have heard this term a few times. I have tried googling it only to end up confused as to what it means.

I understand it as a link between age and area.

If something occupies a larger space, it has likely been around for longer than something similar that is using a smaller space.

Example.
A plant species found over an area of 10 acres has likely been there for longer than a plant species that spans only 2 of the same acres
