The top division for American college football is called Division 1. There are 131 teams organized into 10 conferences. Typically, teams play 12 regular season games, of which 8 or 9 are against teams in their conference.

In order to determine who the “best” teams are, there’s a committee that votes each week to rank the top 25 teams in the country. Two teams could both have 8 wins and 0 losses, but one team would be ranked higher than the other if their wins came against better teams. At the end of the season, the top 4 teams play in a two round playoff, and the winner of that playoff is the national champion.

Aside from the championship, there are “bowl games,” which are special postseason games. A team has to win at least 6 regular season games to be eligible to play in a bowl game, and they have to be invited. The bowl games could really be their own ELI5 topic.

There are 3 Divisions with Division 1 having two subdivisions (Football Championship Subdivision or FCS and Football Bowl Subdivision or FBS). While some FCS teams will play FBS teams, games are usually played between teams in the same division. Each division and subdivision has their own championship but the closest to the college equivalent to the superbowl is the FBS championship. 99% of the time when people refer to *the* national championship they’re talking about the FBS championship, which is the one being played tonight between TCU and Georgia.

>is there one power ranking for all ?

No. There are multiple different polls in each division put together by different groups and they’re only ranked within their division, not against teams in other divisions. When it comes to the FBS, the one that really matters is the CFP (College Football Playoff) Poll. That’s the one that determines who gets into the playoff.

>and is like every single secondary school w a football team ranked ???

Also no. Every division has a ranking system and every team is looked at for ranking but the lists only go through the top 25 teams of each division.

Yes, the national championship game that was tonight, won by Georgia 65-7 over TCU.

Currently, there are rankings based on win-loss record, quality of wins, etc. that determine the top 4 teams, who play in semi-final games to determine the two teams that play for the national title.
