If we are talking about the theoretical Spark ignition engines, then higher the compression ratio, higher is efficiency. But you can only have so much pressure before your engine parts start to fail from it. Current petrol or gasoline cars have ratios up to 16:1 (usually around 12:1)

Small engine guy here. Think of compression like filling up your bicycles tire with a manual pump. If the spark plug is removed, compression is 0, making it easy to pull the starter. If compression is high, then its hard to pull the starter,but theres way more efficency. You can have so much compression as long as your parts can handle it. Too much compression: not good for the cylinder. Low compression: not gonna start
