Considering the pain that comes along with passing kidney stones, why is sedation/anesthesia not an option during the operation?

Anesthesia is relatively dangerous. You need to be monitored by a professional anesthesiologist and there is a risk of life-threatening complications. When the issue is someone’s ureter spasming painfully there just isn’t any reason to undergo such a risk. It can also take a relatively long time to pass a kidney stone, potentially *weeks*. It would be extremely unsafe to try to keep someone sedated for that long.
