Many things in life (e.g. a bucket of water, a beach, a girder, the contents of an engine cylinder) are made up of a vast number of tiny identical bits. This lets us treat them as if they are continuous. Instead of worrying about what each water molecule is doing, we can just think about how properties like pressure and temperature vary with time and space. We can come up with equations that describe this. These equations often have very complicated non-linear behaviour, which we can investigate with maths and/or computer simulations.
