I’ve always been curious about this. For instance, say a famous and widely despised person go to another country, break a law, be deported, but then be rejected by their own nation? What would happen if they can? Would it be like a modern-day banishment?

Part of the deportation process is obtaining consent from the home country. If the home country refuses to repatriate (accept the deportation), the person is just sent to prison in the country that wants to deport them.
This happens all the time with Cuba, China, Hong Kong, Laos, and several other countries. The USA calls them “recaltricant countries”.
I think it’s similar to what happened to good ol’ L. Ron Hubbard for a while. Nobody would let him and his followers in their country so they stayed on ships for a long time.
