The gun will operate normally. The shooter, unless they have their backs to something with a great deal more mass than them. will be driven into a rapid, uncomfortable, and uncontrollable spin by the recoil.

No. Why do you think you would be able to? Could you catch a bullet fired from a gun on Earth? A gun fires in space exactly the same as it does on Earth, except in space, there’s no air to slow down the bullet so it just keeps going in the same direction at the same speed until it interacts with something gravitationally or by direct contact. Atmosphere and gravity (or lack thereof) have no bearing on how a gun functions with the exception that in space there’s no air to cool off the gun so it will overheat much quicker.
