Cushioning honesty in diplomacy doesn’t necessarily dilute the honesty. What does this mean?

An example: “how do I look?”

You could answer “like a can of biscuits stuffed into the ugliest dress I’ve ever seen”

Or: “That style doesn’t suit you”

In both cases you’re basically saying “you look bad” but in the second one you’re being more diplomatic about it. You don’t have to be brutal to be honest. Being nice about what you say isn’t dishonest
