difference between generators and alternators

I’m a newer mechanic (3 years into it) and all my computer research makes me think they’re kind of the same thing?

Alternators, as the name suggests, generate alternating current (AC). Cars use alternators to power electricals and charge the car battery.

“Generator” is a more broad term, and can be an AC or DC (direct current) generator. So, you can say an alternator is a type of generator.
