do backyard bird feeders really help, or are we interfering with the natural feeding process of birds and squirrels etc…

As long as you’re focused on supportung native species, I don’t see a problem. Yes, invasive species show up and feed too.
But on more than one occasion I’ve witnessed raptors snatch those feeding at my feeders. And most the raptors need the help, and help keep things a little in check.
Though I originally bought my feeders in response to forrest fires and helping fleeing bird populations. So yeah they can help.
