Need a fax for a very limited use. I found a Brother 565 for $10 online. Apparently it uses a print ribbon. Anyhow, I only need to send a fax going out and not receive or print anything. Can I do this with an empty or no ribbon?

Have you considered using an online fax service? There are many options, and most will be cheaper and much easier than setting up this fax machine. I run a service ([faxzen.com](http://faxzen.com)) that lets you send a fax online for only $0.49 + $0.07 per page, but again there are others as well.
To send, no. There is nothing to print. At least in theory. I’m sure there are models out there that won’t let you print without ink, but it would not be a machine that uses a ribbon. Go forth and fax!
Why not just use an app to send as a pdf from your phone?
