Do you get poison ivy only when the plant has been damaged?

Is it possible to get the poison ivy rash from just touching the leaves/ outside of the plant, or when it has been damaged/cut etc. I’ve heard different information and I’m not sure how it works. Is urishol ONLY on the inside of the plant or also on the outside surface? Like if I just brush up against an intact plant will I get a rash?

Poison Ivy is a common plant that grows in my area. Most of the time you would get a rash if you touch it and do not wash that area with soap and water. Doesn’t matter what season it is if the plant has leaves or not you can still get a rash from it.

No, the plant contains urishol both internally and also on the leaves. You get the rash both from touching the leaves (or touching anything that has touched the leaves, like clothing) as well from touching damaged roots, stems, anything really.

Just don’t touch it.
