Dr. Browns bottles

How do Dr. Browns bottles actually work? I think they’re supposed to reduce air intake but how do they do that?

This is from the Dr Brown website: That one small straw is actually the reservoir of a powerful internal vent system that’s clinically proven to reduce colic, decreases spit-up, burping, and gas. The internal vent system works by channeling air away from the liquid contents in the bottle, be that milk or formula, eliminating negative pressure and air bubbles. No air in the milk means no air in baby’s belly – and less feeding problems.

When the baby sucks milk out of the bottle, that volume needs to be replaced with air. With most other bottles, the hole in the nipple will allow some air back, and bubbles will go up through the milk.

Dr Brown’s bottles have a valve that lets air into the colored tube. This lets replacement air into the bottle without making bubbles.

Personally, I felt that the claimed advantage of fewer air bubbles in the milk was less of an advantage vs the constant pressure of the baby always being able to get milk without having to fight the vacuum in the bottle.
