I’m a (non-American) whited dude. I grew up playing basketball where I’ve played with players from the states wearing durags. I’ve lived in the states but in mostly white areas so hiphop culture wasn’t as much present there. I always thought that durags were just a fashion statement but I recently watched videos of black people taking care of their hair and I realized how different their hair is compared to mine. This lead me to thinking there might be more into durags, but I have no idea what it could be. So do they serve a purpose or are they just apparel? Thank you for your help.

They do serve a purpose besides being an accessory.
The soft material and the elasticity allow it to be tied tight to the head to basically press down on the hair. The compression of the hair as it is growing keeps it flat and under control, it trains the hair. Another reason is to produce “waves”. The compression and soft material together allow the hair to be formed into waves, which is the biggest trend.
If you have dreads or braids, which are usually too heavy after awhile, it keeps them tight and from bouncing around.
As a white dude, you would use it to train your hair to flow back if it’s longer, or if it’s short you could get some waves too.
