Because Tuesday is the slowest day with the least customers and profits. They don’t want to miss Fri-Mon period which is the most active but want to give staff rest and save some money.

Fri-Sun being their busiest days, restaurants can order heavy going in because there is less chance of waste. Monday’s often serve as a ‘last day’ to use that fresh product that came in on Friday. I won’t dine on a Monday, and if somehow forced out, I’m sure not ordering Today’s Special.

maybe because so many are closed on mondays, they’re open with less competition?

On what country?? In Thailand, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a restaurant closed a single day of the week. You just rotate employees.

If most people are closed on Monday it makes sense to fill that gap and take another low revenue day off instead.

In China, a lot of places are closed on Tuesday, from the reason the top comment mentioned. A lot are also closed on Mobday as well, making Mon+Tue their weekend

When they were deciding on the off day the owner said “When you want off? Choose day?” “Ok, Tuesday”

I live in a city that isn’t close to the coast. A sushi chef told me Japanese restaurants are often closed on Mondays/Tuesdays because seafood shipments usually arrive Monday, and then they need time to prep it all.
Upscale Chinese restaurants often feature their menu around seafood so I would imagine some of them do it for the same reason as well.

This may not be the case for restaurants in cities and areas close to harbors.

I don’t know the actual reason, but my reasoning would be if alot of places are closed on monday, closing tuesday could give you a share of those customers. Kind of like fast food places that are open past midnight.

In India they just rotate employees. Never seen a restaurant closed on any day of the week. Weekends everyone works weekdays its rotation
