Eli5 a summary of how the new NBA in season tournament will work

I just heard about the new tournament system and I still don’t understand the concept at all. Can someone please help explain to me what this means for the league, what will happen, and will there still be a regular season? I’m to dumbfounded to even think straight on this new function that is being implemented. I would mean a lot.

One of the problems the NBA has tried to address recently is that the regular season is not particularly exciting. It is a long season, 82 games, and many teams use load management with their best players and don’t have the best starting fives every night. Because of this, the NBA wants to add a bit of flare to the regular season.

So, yes, there will still be a regular season. The tournament games will be played alongside the regular season games, starting in November on Tuesdays and Fridays.

There will first be group play (think of the world cup as a comparison), all 30 teams will be split into 6 groups. The six group winners advance, and the top two second place teams from the remaining teams advance as well as Wild Cards.

Then it becomes single elimination. Eight teams playing win or go home games.

The semi-finals and finals games will be played in Las Vegas in December. With the winners being given 500 K, and the second place team being given 200 K.

The idea is to add excitment to a part of the sport many find boring, and the hope is that players take it seriously. It has nothing to do with the NBA post-season. If the Warriors were to win the in season torunament, that does not guarantee them anything in terms of post-season rights. The same is true if a team doesn’t win. No draft stock will be affected either.
