ELI5- acids and bases. What makes skin bubble? Why is milk so effective?

1.35K views

Really curious about my body’s pH both for my insides and outsides. So please tell me why milk is so effective for tear gas and spiciness??

On the skin…. Why do some products bubble the skin to a degree. Is there time or just concentration?

How do I know or regulate my internal pH if you know…

I have a lot of general and maybe odd questions. So explain to me like I am 5 about bases and acids and what they do in and out if the body. I am aware of the levels and different products and general
Knowledge… I think. Any info would be really appreciated. Thank for helping teach me good.

Acids have extra loose hydrogen (H+); bases have extra loose hydroxide (OH-). The more that’s loose, the stronger they are.

pH 1 is a strong acid, pH 6.5 is a weak acid, pH 7 is neutral (pure water), pH 7.5 is a weak base, pH 14 is a strong base.

Within your body, your stomach has strong acid, the start of the small intestine has strong base (bile), and the lungs or blood can be slightly acidic or basic but that’s not healthy. Oh, and the bladder contents can be affected to be slightly more acidic or basic by what you eat or drink (cranberry juice is acidic, recommended for infections & stones).

Outside of the stomach & bladder, you can’t affect the pH of your body & that’s a Really Good Thing because the chemical processes which keep you alive happen in a narrow range. The body has several redundant features to keep the pH just right for life.

As others have said, pepper spray or hot peppers aren’t working by acid/base. They activate pain receptors.

To stop the pain, cut off the oxygen. If you’ve been sprayed in the face, put your face in a sink or bucket full of water. Breathing is a problem… I’ve read that sour cream works well as a salve until you can get to a sink or shower.

Use lots of running water, soap, and don’t let the runoff onto your delicate bits or you’ll have a whole new sort of pain.
