Eli5: allergy meds: why do some work better than others, and for certain people? Can you grow a tolerance/ immunity to the effects of certain allergies medications?

Some meds just plain don’t work for anyone.

Decongestant pills with phenylephrine as the active ingredient are basically placebos, research has shown it’s pretty much worthless taken orally. As a nose spray it works ok.Doesn’t stop companies from marketing it though.

Pseudoephedrine works well as a decongestant for many people, but the side effects vary greatly. Some peiple it makes anxious and wired. Others it makes tired. And of course since it theoretically could be used to make meth, it’s restricted. fuck all those allergy sufferers.
