I’m not sure why but yes, it’s fortunate there are several to choose from because some work better on an individual basis. And yes I have heard in practice of (again individual) experiences of years of use seemingly having waning effect and then switching again seems to help
Regarding otc meds in particular the general rule is the more fat soluble the more effective, such as diphenhydramine being more efficacious than some others, however due to this reason they’re more likely to cross the blood brain barrier and induce side effects such as sedation
