Eli5 – ancient climates/weather.

I actually work in a scientific field (inflammatory diseases) but tbh I do not have the slightest clue about how you can trace back what temperature it could have been at in the year 8500BC +/- hundreds of years. Like are there extrapolations of smaller timeframe models (from when we started recording T to nowadays?) also palaeontology etc. Anyways I’m lost, I await to be enlightened and if there is any pertinent literature I’m a taker 🙂

They use what are termed ‘proxy measurements’. They find something they can measure – tree rings, ice cores, etc. – which can be broken down by time and correlate well with temperature.
