The volume of a liquid displaced is exactly equal to the volume of the object placed in it. So you can fill up a 100ml beaker to the brim, dip your item in it, take it out, and read off the new mark. Obviously some water will overflow, so you might be left with, say, 60ml. Therefore, the volume of your object would be 100-60=40ml.

Archimedes Principle.

When you submerge an object in a liquid there are two main forces to look at. The gravity force downward, and the buoyancy force upward.

If you measure the apparent weight (force downward) of a submerged object, you can use this to determine its volume, as the buoyant force is equal to the weight of the displaced liquid.
