Eli5: Are we causing childhood obesity by giving babies pacifiers when they fuss?

Pacifiers have been used for generations, and there were many generations raised with pacifiers who didn’t have a large rate of childhood obesity, so the odds of that being the case are low.
It’s probably got more to do with the fact that sugar is used as cheap filler in literally everything on the shelf.
