I found it weird until I was at the Dr and they said that certain races are subject to certain things more often. Like Ashkenazi Jews, my friend has so many health issues and they attribute it to her genes of her people in general. Not just family. I guess it’s to grasp as much info to prevent needing to ask a question later? Sorry best I could think of.

For large private companies, they want to track all your data to make things tailored as close to you as possible.

If they notice that you are black and black people buy a specific item (say chinos instead of jeans) more than other ethnicities, they can tailor ads to you closer to what their data suggests in the hope that you buy more stuff.

The models are a lot more complex than just ethnicity (they’ll look at literally everything: your age, time of day, type of device), but this is a simplified version of what happens.

What breed of dog are you? That’s the same question. All the same base genetics but we run the gambit from terriers to mastiff, and all breeds have traits that are more likely to show up.( Edit spelling)

What’s really weird is the way it’s structured. It’s got that weird “Are you white Hispanic or black hispanic?” question. Like… why does that matter?

thats how they gather demographic data. you know when they say “this profession is underrepresented by X race” they get that from the form data asking people to pick a race.

There are also other reasons depending on form, certain races have certain genetic health problems, but mostly its just to gather data.

On government forms, typically used to collect statistical data. The BLS, Census Bureau and BEA collect and publish (their web sites are public) data series and statistics for the US. When you see reports of income distribution, age distribution, etc etc, this is where the data comes from.

Large companies may want to collect data on their employees’ ethnic backgrounds so they can identify issues with prejudicial recruitment/HR outcomes. Eg, “We hired 2500 people last quarter and they’re all white – what’s going on here?”.

Because of USA racism.

The scientific community is clear that there are no races, it’s an American thing, though you’ll see lots of supposed explanations, all bogus.

There cannot be health reasons, because black, for instance, is not a race. Two random black people may be genetically closer to a Scandinavian than to each other.

It’s how they figure out what to serve as a gesture of employee appreciation instead of a raise. Whites get the pizza party. Hispanics get the taco Tuesday platter. “Other” gets the potluck.

Choosing not to answer is also pizza.
