Hello! Why is my popcorn has 90 calories for 1 cup, but 260 for 3? Where are the 10 calories missing? Thank you 🙂

It’s just rounding. The exact number might be closer to, oh, 88 calories. For 1 cup they round it to 90.

But for 3 cups it should be 264, and they can round it to 260.

The numbers are not exact but rounded

The US rules are 50 calories and less are rounded to the nearest 5 calories inclement. Above 50 it is to the nearest 10. Rules around the world is similar if not the same. There is a reason the calorie number always ends with a 5 or a 0

I did not look up the exact rounding rules like if 65 should be rounded to 60 or 70, let’s ignore that.

The result is that 90 calories can be 85-95 calories and 260 can be 255-265.

If we divide the higher range by 3 we get 85 – 88.3. This means for one serving the real number is rounded up to 90 but for 3 it can be rounded up or down to 260.

Food labels have rounding rules in place. This allows for natural variability in the content of the food. Up to 50 calories rounds to the nearest 5, over 50 rounds to the nearest 10. So each cup of popcorn may actually be more like 85 calories instead of 90. So for 3 cups, the actual amount would be 255 calories, which rounds to 260.
