Humans are tribal animals – we depend on one another for help to the betterment of both. Many things evolved as a way for us to signal things to other members of the tribe before we had the benefit of language.

Crying means something is wrong. You are hurt or you are sad or you are scared. More specifically, you need the help of another member of the tribe. Another tribe member sees you crying and they know that you need help, so they come to help.
