eli5 can someone explain what causes Northern Lights!

The sun is constantly ejecting material through the galaxy; we call this the solar winds.

When the stuff hits earths atmosphere; the particles smash into stuff in the earths atmosphere; becoming charged.  The charge disappears and the sun stuff glows

The discharge from the sun is drawn towards the magnetic poles of earth; which is why we only see them (normally) near the north and south poles
