Eli5: can someone please explain how resizing a ring works? If my engagement ring has (for example) 10 diamonds around the band, and I need the band smaller…..how do they keep all the 10 diamonds on with the right spacing?! Same with making the ring bigger?? Thanks!

Usually the diamonds don’t go all the way around the band. They stop somewhere on the sides since if they’re on the underside where your finger makes contact with things they can easily get damaged and fall out. Also no one can see them so they’re a waste of money.

So usually they expand/shrink the underside of the band to fit. If they’re drastically enlarging it they might add another diamond or two.

Also those small stones are relatively inexpensive. The main stone is what you’re really paying for.

They can’t keep it the spacing absolutely the same, but still close enough to look good.

To resize rings, all jewelers do is cut the part of the ring that doesn’t have the gems on it, so the part that’s “inside” your finger. From there they then can either stretch out that gap and fill it in a bit to make it bigger, or pull the two sides over each other to make the ring smaller.

Obviously this oversimplifies, but that is essentially how it works.

to make it smaller the goldsmith removes a little section of the ring, preferably on the side thats facing the palm. to enlargen he either adds a piece (also usually facing the palm) or if the ring is wide (like ‘chunky’ish) enough uses the existing material making the ring itself slightly thinner.
engravings would have to be redone but thats no big deal really.

Its not really possible to keep the spacing right in the stated case. depending you have to either get a new ring and reuse the diamonds, have a goldsmight add a layer of gold or whatever metal to the inside of the ring (in an emergency oneself could add a layer of hot glue instead to make it fit better, tho maybe not on a diamont ring) or wear it behind a ring that actually fits. you can show your ring to your nearest godlsmith and he can tell you what is best
