Eli5: China’s cultural revolution & it’s relivance in “The Three Body Problem”

I am starting to read “The Three Body Problem” by Cixin Liu and I am having trouble understanding the setting at the beginning. It started in 1966 during China’s Cultural RevolutionI am bad at history in general and being American my historical education is pretty American/European-centric I think I am mostly confused about the motivations of the two sides. Like I know Mao was trying to keep his position from a post on here, and he insulted the youth with propaganda I guess. But I am confused as to what the movement was about what they were moving against and what the outcome was. Idk how relivant it is for the book but it seems like something I should understand in general. Thank you for any help.

Edit: Oh yeah. The part I think is most relevant to the book and that I do not understand is why they are against these proffesors.

The cultural revolution was basically a war on intellectuals, as the communist party identified intellectuals as a threat to the existence of the party
