Why in the world does compressed paper explode?

Its compressed. Compressed things have stored energy.

Think about a balloon, filled with air, it being compressed by the elasticity of the rubber. You pop it, it explodes.

It’s not the paper that explodes, but the temperature in the container that rises above the combustion point of paper.

Compressing the air makes it hot, and if it gets hot enough, the piece of paper will burn.
